Trauma Skills Summit - Day 1 - Wheel of Awareness - Daniel J. Siegel

The Wheel of Awareness: A Trauma Recovery Tool for Well-Being

Daniel J. Siegel, MD

Dr. Siegel introduces us to the Wheel of Awareness, a tool for consciousness integration that has been shown to improve well-being and trauma recovery in thousands of patients. You’ll discover how both integrating and differentiating various parts of our mind and experience can support healing, as well as the importance of being able to access states of pure awareness.

Session Highlights:

  • How the nature of reality, energy, and quantum laws can affect our healing and potentiality
  • Consciousness as a multifaceted integration of mind, body, sensory experience, and relationship
  • Understanding how to use the Wheel of Awareness as a tool for working with trauma
  • The importance of moving out of plateau states of consciousness and into planes of possibility
The practice of the Wheel
- The hub - awareness - mindful awareness - people say it is freedom, joy, love, god, timeless, empty but full
- Many people have never had any meditation or spiritual experience
- energy is movement from possibility to actuality
- when actuality has arisen (100%), the subset all plateau.  A thought/emotion/memory is a peak.  The energy has moved to the peak.. when you thinking/remember, it is beneath the peak.  When you are in frighten mode, that will be the plateau.  The hub of the awareness seems to be at the plane of possibility (from 10,000 survey).  The subjective experience of knowing is the plane of possibility.  For trauma, because of uncertainty is dangerous for me as a young child, I need to mentally construct a plateau which is safer than the openness of the uncertainty of the plane of possibility.  While I am avoiding the uncertainty, the other options are resting in the plane (GOD - generator of diversity) - if I have a poisoning plateau that is rigid, not very bendable, I cannot drop into the plane of possibility.
- The synonym of freedom is uncertainty and possibility.  The terror is the plateau trying to protect them from the fear of the childhood.  When they have the courage to drop into the hub (the plane of possibility).
- The trauma has walked into adaptive, rigidity, can drop into the freedom of the uncertainty of the plane.
- Part of the healing is to abandon the flimsy sense of certainty.  For a kid, it is safer to believe that he is defective and that's why he is not getting what he needs (rather than thinking that his parent is not reliable).  The shame state is the best any kids could have done as a kid.  To let it go the shame of plateau, and drop to the plane of uncertainty.  If you can just say Thank You, shame, but I don't need you anymore.
- Plane of possibility - love, inter-connection, awareness - a much bigger vital force of love, not just attachment love.
